currently, the polyurethane industry on both sides of the pacific is wary of the possible fallout from the us-china trade dispute.
the united states has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on a range of key industrial imports from china. the move is the administration’s retaliation for a series of tariffs china imposed in april on soft fruit, nuts and steel pipes from the united states.
the categories of chinese products listed on the june 20 u.s. federal register that may be taxed include:
polymer and rubber cutting machinery;
injection molding machines for rubber or plastic shoes;
ordinary plastic production machinery;
shoe molds; and plastic processing machine tools.
the deputy secretary-general of china polyurethane industry association stated that “the second batch of products (to be taxed by the united states) includes polyurethane products. we only have one company exporting (a large amount of) polyether polyols to the united states, and we are still observing the taxation impact of taxes.”
the american chemistry council states that “if the unintended consequence of u.s. trade policy is to raise the cost of producing polyurethane, it could affect the many companies that depend on this important chemical. “
the american chemistry council added: “chemicals should not be involved in this or any trade war. it is too important to our economy, our jobs and the myriad of innovative products that make our modern lives possible.
countries like china are well aware of the importance of chemicals to the health of our economy, which is why they retaliate against our industry.
chemicals are the foundation of the manufacturing value chain. when our industry gets hit with tariffs, nstream industries like autos feel the pain too.
ultimately, the cost of living for american families will rise. they may not feel it yet, but consumers will soon feel the real impact of these tariffs if the trump administration does not strike a truce with china soon. “
